Physical Education
Intent (Our School Vision)
Physical Education at Holy Trinity aims to provide pupils with the skills, habits, and knowledge to not only become healthy and contributing members, but also leaders in the wider community. We aim to develop pupils’ physical, social, and cognitive literacy to obtain the skills and knowledge in health and sport.
We aim to ensure that all pupils develop the fundamental skills and ability to excel in a wide range of physical activities by providing a broad and balanced curriculum with opportunities and experiences for all to be enjoyed. It also contributes to the development of a range of important cognitive skills, such as decision-making and analysis, and social skills such as teamwork and communication. Our PE curriculum will be inclusive, high-quality, and ensure that pupils of all abilities access the activities where they are physically active for sustained periods to encourage them to lead active, healthy lives. Opportunities will be provided for pupils to take on leadership roles where they can build character skills and embed our Christian Values.
How is the Physical Education Curriculum implemented in our school?
The Physical Education curriculum enriches the experiences of all pupils here at Holy Trinity. We use The PE Hub Scheme of Work to give pupils opportunities to develop basic skills, think creatively, develop problem-solving skills, and inspire teamwork. We encourage pupils to engage with break time and lunch time activities, as well as complete the Daily Mile at the beginning of each school day before learning commences. While other elements of the National Curriculum are encouraged to be active, we cover other parts of Physical Education in PSHE, such as:
Healthy eating
Setting fitness challenges and goals
The elements of a balanced, healthy lifestyle
Recognising what might influence healthy lifestyles
Why it is good to be healthy and how exercise affects the body
By covering these topic areas in PSHE, we provide pupils with the tools and knowledge they need to make a positive impact on their physical well-being and health, as well as lead an active lifestyle.
In Year 5, our pupils have weekly swimming lessons during the school year, which will allow pupils to meet the National Curriculum requirements for swimming in Key Stage 2.
How do we measure the impact of our Physical Education Curriculum?
By providing our pupils with the necessary skills, they will appreciate why it is important to be physically active and continue taking part in regular exercise, as well as leading a healthy lifestyle. We measure the impact of our Physical Education through tracking the pupils’ progress using The PE Hub online assessment tool. To ensure we continue to deliver high-quality lessons and opportunities, we engage in team-teaching termly between staff, our PE Lead, and our sports coach, provide CPD for staff where applicable, and gather both pupil voice and staff voice to reflect and improve what we offer. We also share sporting achievements, both in and out of school, in Celebration Worship on a Friday. Through the opportunity to share their achievements, pupils inspire one another to continue engaging in a healthy and active lifestyle.
