History of the British Seaside

This term, Year 2 will be learning about British seaside holidays and how they have changed over time. Children will explore seaside destinations from the past and present, comparing how people travelled, the clothes they wore and the activities they enjoyed. They will learn about Victorian seaside holidays and think about how holidays have changed over the years. Children will also create their own holiday brochures and develop their understanding of the importance of the seaside in Britain. As part of our topic, we are looking forward to visiting Viking Bay, where the children will have the opportunity to explore a real seaside location and bring their learning to life.

This topic will be linked across the curriculum. In English, children will be reading The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me, I Heard It in the Playground, Port Side Pirates and No More Plastic, using these texts to develop their comprehension skills and inspire their writing. They will write reviews, advertisements, leaflets, instructions and diary entries, focusing on using descriptive language and organising their ideas clearly. In Science, children will learn about life cycles, plants, hygiene and healthy lifestyles, finding out how living things grow and how to keep their bodies healthy. In RE, they will learn about Judaism, exploring important stories, celebrations and traditions. In Design and Technology, children will learn about healthy eating and balanced diets, while in Computing they will create simple programs and learn how to stay safe online.

We are looking forward to a positive and enjoyable term, with lots of opportunities for discussion, creativity and practical learning.
