Maths

Today we are learning to add by making 10. This may seem daunting to begin with, but once you get into the swing of it, you'll have no problems at all! We can add numbers within 20 by using our knowledge of number bonds to help us. It is important to work practically using objects and 10s frames (use what every objects you have to hand and you can draw 10s frames on pieces of paper) to help us see how the number bonds to 10 can help us work out the addition sums. This method will help us in the future when we begin to use mental strategies to work out calculations. Watch the video that is linked in as a warm up explanation and then flick through the PowerPoint (or watch it as a video) for further explaining and examples. Once you have tried some of the questions independently, there are some worksheets for you to complete. If you feel like you have a good grasp of the method, there is a final challenge question on the PowerPoint for you to try. This may seem like a confusing method to begin with, but by using objects and the 10s frame, it soon becomes clear how this method works. Good luck and have fun :)!

Topic

In today’s Topic lesson we are learning about what babies need and what babies do. Do you have any initial ideas? Me and Miss Soutter had a video call with Daisy and her Mum and asked lots of questions about what Daisy needs and what her Mum does for her. We would then like you to create a poster including a title, interesting facts and pictures about what babies need. Make sure you start your sentences with a capital letter, leave finger spaces between your words, include adjectives and end your sentences with a piece of punctuation.

Reading

Today’s book is called ‘Room on the Broom’ by Julia Donaldson and it is read by Alan Mandel. See if you can answer these questions with your parent as you go through the video, make sure you pause the video in places to give you a chance to answer. Feel free to answer the questions verbally or write your answers down if you want to.

  1. What will the book be about? Who or what can you see in the first picture?
  2. Where do you think the witch and the cat are going?
  3. Will they find the witch’s hat?
  4. Which adjectives could you use to describe the dog?
  5. Can you list all of the things that the witch dropped?
  6. How do you think they all felt when the broomstick broke? Why?
  7. How might they be saved from the dragon?
  8. What did they do to scare away the dragon?
  9. Did you enjoy this book? Why or why not?
