BEAM

BEAM (Balance, Education And Movement)

We love using BEAM at school - it helps to support gross motor skills, balance and coordination. Plus it can help improve listening skills.

Let's start with a warm up exercise and then we'll move on to doing some of the main exercises.

One of our favourite warm ups is the "Beans" game.

First, find a space where you won’t knock into anything! Begin by jogging gently on the spot. Ask an adult to call out the name of a bean and you demonstrate the action.

Here's some ideas for your adults to call out:

  • String beans – stretch up as high as you can.
  • Broad beans – make yourself as wide as you can.
  • Runner beans – run on the spot.
  • Jumping beans – jump on the spot.
  • Jelly beans – shake your whole body like jelly.
  • Baked beans – wipe your brow and say, ‘Phew!’.
  • Beans on toast – lie flat on the floor.
  • Chilli beans – shiver as though you are very cold.

I'm sure you'll be able to come up with a few other “beans” to include! Perhaps you can be "Teacher" and call the names for your adult to demonstrate. Have fun!!!
